5 Steps to Simplicity
Sometimes life gets crazy and hectic and it seems like the world is spinning out of control. Other days, we are just lucky to get out of bed. According to the experts, those people who advise on getting it all together, the key is to slow down and simplify, simplify, simplify. Here are the five keys to creating calm and centered life through simplification.
1) Make A List of The 5 Most Important Things In Your Life.
The list making and editing process is vital to getting down to what matters. Once you have a decent list, choose your top priorities in order. This list is what will guide you to what you really want to accomplish in your life.
2) Learn To Say No.
Remember “No” is a complete sentence, and if you learn to use it, you won’t be over scheduled with commitments that you don’t have time or energy for. No, “no” doesn’t mean you’re rude or anti-social. It’s a word that is designed to keep you from doing things that are not important or necessary. In my book “No” is the gateway to a nap or a great movie by myself.
3) Establish Routines.
Routines streamline the mundane but necessary tasks in life. Instead of trying to find time to wash clothes, building a laundry routine for the week will allow you to fit it into your schedule. Instead of blocking off a huge chunk of time and dreading laundry, make it part of the day… Into the wash when you leave for the day, into the dryer when you get home, and folded and put away after dinner. The same goes for exercise. Is you plan it into the day it doesn’t become something extra you have to do. You just do it, like brushing your teeth.
4) Love It Or Leave It.
This mantra goes for life all across the board. Don’t love that cable knit sweater anymore? Off to the thrift store it goes. Tired of that painting in your living room you’ve had for ten years? Then it’s time to move on. Clean out the clutter and move on.
5) Evaluate Commitments And Time.
Referring back to your top 5 priorities list, evaluate. You may find that you are spending a lot of wasted time that doesn’t serve you or move you towards your goals. This is where you will have to make the tough decisions. Does the weekly coffee date is really the best use of your Friday morning, is that funny but dumb show you watch every night really how you want to spend your time? Is mindlessly surfing the internet a time suck? If it’s not serving you mentally, physically or emotionally it has to go bye, bye.
I know, these 5 steps to simplicity are easier said than done. It takes a lot of determination to simplify your life, but it is possible.
