Just Say No to Oil Free Moisturizer
Just say no to oil free moisturizer! That’s an idea that is hard for most of us to swallow. As I continue to try to eliminate unnecessary chemicals from my life I am continually confronted with these mantras that roll around in my brain. They are ideas I formed from marketing campaigns and trends. Cleansing with oil is one of the misnomers I have carried with me since my preteens–no doubt from Seventeen magazine. I was raised by modern culture to believe that oil=bad, oil free=good. Wrong.
In my oily teenage years I lathered my face with rubbing alcohol and witch-hazel to take off the shine. I thought my Neutrogena oil free foundation and my Nivea cold cream were the keys to finding teenage beauty. It’s no wonder that cleansing oil was antithetical to my narrative that oil is the devil. But now, into my 50s I have become a believer in cleansing with oil. In fact with Kari Gran’s wonderful smelling all natural cleansing oil I look forward to it. So what made me change? You could say a little information. Real information.
Here’s the scoop. When your skin is stripped of its natural oils, it produces more oil to compensate for the loss. For those with oily skin, this means more breakouts, blackheads, and aggravated skin. For those with dry skin or sensitive skin, it means the skin is going to get even drier and more irritated.
Using oil to wash your face means that it will naturally dissolve the dirty oils on your skin without stripping it or using harsh chemicals. Not only is this method simpler, more affordable, better for your skin, and eco-friendly, but the oil-cleansing method is the best for completely removing dirt and makeup. It removes mascara, eyeliner, foundation, everything—all in one step!
