Kari vs. Lisa: What’s Your Routine to Live Clean & Green?
As a company who runs off organic and goes the extra mile when it comes to eco-friendly procedures (even our packaging peanuts are edible), living “clean and green” is in our DNA. However, while Kari regularly sticks to a deep dark shade of green on the color meter, Lisa’s daily living can bounce from carefree Celedon to earth-friendly Emerald at any given moment.
Here, we break down a few ways each of us strives to live clean and green. Does it always work for us? A lot of the time. Do we slip up? You bet. But we do our best, wherever we can, in a way we can happily manage.
- How do you try and eat healthy on the go? What is your typical eating routine?
Kari: When I’m on the go, if I don’t plan ahead and have something in my bag, I’m set up for what I call a “Pop-Tart Moment.” This used to happen to me when I sold real estate. I’d go all day without eating, see a grocery store and pop in. My brain was so far gone (no food or water in a good long time) that I’d be unable to form a complete thought like, “I could get something in the deli or a piece of fruit and some nuts.” Nope. I would end up in front of the Pop-Tarts and buy a box and gobble them up while I drove away. My lizard brain completely took over and the sugar would zip me up and then CRASH.
Now, I always make a green drink in the morning that is mostly vegetables (in the VitaMix so there’s also all the fiber). I will drink one and fill two small canning jars with the rest (over ice) and drink these through the day with a handful of nuts. Nuts are a great low cost source of protein and healthy fats.
My general eating routine is usually pretty good when I plan ahead, but I’m always working on it to be consistently good. Unlike my “big sister” Lisa, I’m not one who moderation comes to naturally and it’s quite nice to soak that up when I’m near her. Frankly, I don’t have a moderate bone in my body so it’s refreshing (and puzzling) to observe someone who moves through life with that sort of ease. The thought I could eat what I want, when I want and not have to devour the entire bar or chocolate still escapes me. I aspire to be more moderate.
Lisa: As you know, I am all about moderation, so this is right up my alley.
Lunch alternates between 1) missing it, 2) Indian food from Shanik, 3) light Caesar salad, 4) sandwich on the run or anything leftover in our fridge at work. Sometimes it is not pretty. I hate to pack a lunch and Kari and I mostly work through lunch so we can get out of here on time.
For dinner, I eat just about whatever I want—and since it’s just the two of us, my husband Clark and I eat out a lot. At least a few nights a week and always with wine! I’d like to think that I order well, but I do eat just about anything—but in moderation.
The only consistent healthy habits my household has found a groove for are:
- We always have fresh blueberries in the fridge and eat them by the handfuls throughout the day.
- We snack on olives and nuts while we decide where to go eat and keep cheese nibbling to a minimum. Plus, nibbling on spendy, fancy cheese hunks is not great for the wallet either.
- We also bought a soda seltzer maker (The Penguin) about five years ago. We love it and make bubbly water all the time to drink. Bubbly water is infinitely more exciting to drink than plain water, so we drink more water as a result.
- In the summer, I go to a couple of farmers markets in the neighborhood, so we have lots of fresh fruit that I eat with breakfast every day.
On the topic of breakfast, I do try and make up for my wining and dining here, and go for fairly healthy choices. Greek yogurt, blueberries, maybe eggs (always cooked in butter though). I often get on shredded wheat cereal with blueberry kicks too. On the weekends, I go out to brunch and eat everything in sight.
- What is your healthcare philosophy? Eastern, Western or a combination of both?
Kari: My philosophy has always leaned towards Eastern when I felt a bit let down by Western. Now I think it’s healthy to have a good combination of the two. My primary physician is a Naturopathic Doctor (ND) and she doesn’t hesitate to send me to a more specialized MD when needed.
I regularly see an Endocrinologist to manage my thyroid disease. I was diagnosed at 29 with Graves and Hashimotos, which are both autoimmune forms of thyroid disease. My ND was the one who finally figured out why I was having so many issues (praise her!). I had tried the western route with years and years of frustration.
I have tried and liked acupuncture and am always open to alternative treatments.
Lisa: My healthcare approach has evolved and is now a nice combination of naturopathic, chiropractic and a Western doctor. I’m fortunate that I’m healthy, so I really just go in for annual checkups.
Every day I take bioidentical hormones from the naturopath, along with a vitamin. I hate to take prescription pills, so I avoid them at all costs. Massage and acupuncture I only seem to use when I’m hurting—I’ve never taken up the habit to use them as a preventative measure, but would like to.
I’m pretty religious about yoga 4+ times a week and I think it is a real key for me to feel good, both physically and emotionally. And I love to walk. I walk my dogs Maggie and Carly to dinner often, and I always take the stairs when I’m by myself and I move quickly. My husband Clark says that I have an aerobic lifestyle—always moving, just never in a gym.
I’m the opposite of Clark who is always looking for a pill to fix whatever ails him. Drives me crazy.
- How do you stay “clean and green” while traveling? Or do you?
Kari: When I travel, I pack as much as my own food as possible (unless I’m going to a big city where I know my picky eating habits will be well served). Or, I’ll hit a local grocery store like Whole Foods or a Co-op and stock up. Despite the convenience, I try not to eat on-the-go bars as they generally trigger my sweet tooth.
When it comes to my skin, I reach from the Starter Kit version of our skin care system. All the bottle sizes are TSA-approved, and because the product is so concentrated, even a small amount will usually last an entire trip.
Lisa: I don’t even really try to eat well, because when I’m traveling it’s usually for vacation and all bets are off. Again, I’m not a huge over-indulger, so I don’t really go overboard. When my jeans tighten-up, I have more salads—simple as that.
